Arizona Survivalist/Prepper Expo

Saturday, 19 Oct 2013, I had the opportunity to attend the Arizona Survivalist/Prepper Expo in Mesa, Arizona

Overall, a worthwhile time for those familiar with Survivalist/Prepper activities, but could be overwhelming for someone that is unfamiliar with this mindset. Most of the food storage companies I am familiar with were there. Got a chance to sample some of their products, which were quite tasty.

My main objective was to locate business’ that were local and get a chance to put my hands on some of their products. I enjoy the chance to actually touch and hold something before I buy it, even if I end up ordering the product over the internet. For a $10 entrance fee, I was able to do just that and have a couple of places that I plan on visiting over the next few months.

Here are pictures I took while there. Enjoy!

Affordable Health Care Plan

Whether you call it the “Affordable Health Care Plan” or “ObamaCare”, I have a few questions.

First let me preface this by saying this:

As long as they leave my Tricare Health Plan alone, I will be fine.  Now on to my questions:

1.  Just how affordable is the new plan?

After careful calculation I have found what this new “Affordable Plan” will cost me:

Monthly premium (after credits) – $475

Monthly premium (before credits) – $687.83

Maximum out of pocket costs – $27000/year (meaning I should probably save $1058 a month to cover these)

Not sure which monthly premium payment I will have to make.

Does the subsidy kick in automatically or do I have to file for it at the end of the year?

I am going with the before subsidy payment, so lets look at total possible monthly costs:

$687.83 + $1058 = $1745.83 that will have to be laid away for health care.

Sure, sounds affordable to me.

2.  If business’ can wait one more year, then why can’t I stay on my employer’s plan until he has to change?

3.  How much do the President and the rest of those in power pay for their health plan?

Feel free to comment.  Any and all comments will be appreciated.

Very informative

Let the book review begin.

Let the book review begin.

This book has proven to be quite informative.  Many things are common sense, such as how a jury can use your aggressive demeanor against you during a trial, especially if other witnesses attest to it or if there is a record of it.

Others areas got into the meat, in non-lawyer terms, as to how you can ensure that you were the victim.  Highlights on how to/not conduct yourself and how lawyers can use even the simplest action for or against you.

The overall process from incident to possible trial and even into the trial phase was very informative.  While it can’t get into every situation and how they are handled, it was indeed thought provoking.

Overall, it was worthwhile reading.

Pizza Casserole

This dish is fantastic.

Recipe:

1 lb Italian Sausage

1 chopped onion

1 chopped bell pepper

Brown all 3 of the above together.

Then add:

1 24 oz pasta sauce of your choice

1 lb cooked and drained Rotini Pasta

Mix it up and pour into a greased 13x9x2 pan

Mix the following items together:

16 oz of cottage cheese

sm can of sliced black olives

sm-med can sliced mushrooms (I used fresh mushrooms – sliced them and put them in with the sausage, onion and bell pepper)

12 oz grated mozzarella cheese

Spread mixture over meat/pasta mixture and top with Pepperoni slices.

Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until bubbly and browning.

Another Bread Experiment

I have tried a new bread recipe.  A slight variance in ingredients whereas this one uses 1 teaspoon of yeast.

Here is the recipe:

3 cups of flour

2 tsp of salt

1 tsp of active dry yeast (I now buy the little jars of yeast)

1 and 2/3 cups of hot water (I just let my tap water get hot and use that)

Mix flour, salt and yeast together.  Add water and mix it all up – comes together quickly.  Cover it with a towel and let rise for 18 to 24 hours (depending on my work schedule).  Dump it onto a floured surface and form it into a ball, let it rise for 2 hours and put it in my Dutch Oven that has been sitting in a 45o degree oven.

Put the lid on it and bake for 45 minutes.  Take the lid off and bake for 15 more minutes.  Dump it on a wire rack and let cool.

Note:  I make 2 batches, then combine both batches, let rise and put in Dutch Oven.  Makes for a big round loaf.

Check out these pics:

Gardening with Nasty

All right, here goes nothing.  Received an Earth Box to test from StuffStuff.  Unpacked it and got it set up to start a mini mobile garden.  The box has rollers on it and therefore can be put just about anywhere you could possibly want to.

I watched the video for how to set it up and I only spent about 20 minutes getting everything together and ready to go.  I am starting from seeds so I am quite interested to see how this all comes out.  Red and green bell peppers and Serrano peppers are what I am attempting.

Let's get it out of box and get to work.

UPDATE:  We have sprouts.  Yeah!!!!!!

3 August 2013

Well, I have sprouts.  Everything is coming up green.  So far so good.

Well, I have green sprouts after 1 week. Left corner is Red bell peppers, in the middle (large opening) are serrano peppers that will need thinning, the right rear (Green bell peppers) are not sprouting. The 2 big sprouts closer to the front are black-eyed peas that had gotten wet and sprouted, so I planted them to see how they will do. They and grown about an inch in 1 week. Very happy with the Grow Box so far. Now just have to see how they grow and what is produced to eat.

Update as of 27 July 2013

So far the book is providing quite a bit of “food for thought” as it takes you through the process from “incident” thru “investigation” and into “now is a good time to call your lawyer.”  Very well written for those of us that are not “lawyers.”

Nasty is in the Kitchen

Come on in, it’s not as scary as it sounds.

Well, maybe it is, but come on in anyways.

You see, Nasty has been hungry for homemade bread.  My dad used to bake it all the time and I used to help.  Mostly just helped to eat it, but I was learning.

Found a recipe on line that a bunch were just raving about, so figured I’d give it a try.  Here is the recipe:

3 cups all purpose flour

1 1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon yeast (the recipe calls for instant yeast, but I used a regular yeast packet and mixed it up the way the packet said)

1 1/2 cups lukewarm water

Mix it all together, it doesn’t take long.  Let it set, covered for about 12 – 18 hours, put dough on floured work surface, flatten it out (about a 12″ circle), then fold it in half, fold the corners into the center, place in pan and bake.

The bread is baked in a dutch oven or stock pot (pyrex is said to work too).

Preheat the oven to 500 degrees with the dutch oven and lid inside.

Place folded dough into screaming hot dutch oven, put lid on, close the oven and bake for 25 minutes.  Then take the lid off, and bake for 13 more minutes.

Here are pictures of my results:

It's a 5 quart capacity. Just the right size for me.

An App for popping popcorn

I have been inspired to start a new category here at Nasty’s Corner.

I am calling it:   “You Have Got To Be Kidding Me!”

Here it is:

http://shine.yahoo.com/shine-food/how-to-avoid-burning-your-popcorn–the-perfect-pop-app-130627116.html#!fHI6Y

Yes, they have developed an App for popping popcorn in the microwave.

No, you will not be seeing a field/kitchen/or any other kind of test for it, here on Nasty’s Corner.

If you are too lazy to stand by the microwave for @ 3 minutes while your popcorn pops, then you are too lazy to eat it.  As a matter of fact, you are probably too lazy to do a lot of things, like go to the store and buy it in the first place.

I work in a pretty high tech research facility and am amazed at the number of people that will put a bag of popcorn in the microwave, turn it on, and walk back across the hall into the lab.  Guess what?  If you are concerned about your experiment or whatever you are working on, then you shouldn’t have left it alone in the first place.  Why?  Because when the fire alarms go off and the building is evacuated, your experiment is on it’s own for about an hour.

But I will say this:

If you must have the latest App for your phone, I will not stop you.  Laugh at you, yes.  But I will not stop you.

Happy Memorial Day 2013

While today is reserved to remember and honor those brave service men and women who have gone on before us, let us also remember what they stood for.  They stood for the Constitution.

Our country has a Constitution that is the envy of the world.  Many rights are protected by it.

Lately, our representative government has attempted to move away from the Constitution and become more of a democratic form of government.

I have defended the Constitution for many years and will continue until I draw my last breath.  It is time to stand up and remind our representatives exactly what kind of government they are part of.  Unfortunately the current residents in Washington are nothing more than a CEO club.  They think that they are the only one’s that matter.  Another unfortunate part of this deal is that regular people like me and you can’t afford to go traipsing around the country campaigning.  Otherwise, we might actually get some people running the show that could really do something.

It is sad that our President, Senators and Representatives are paid hundred’s of thousands of dollars (individually) and their only concern is what can I get before I am replaced.  Is there a way to fix this?  Or are we stuck with it?

Unfortunately we are stuck with it – simply because to many are content with letting the government run their lives.

Our representatives are too concerned with social functions and being seen with prominent people, than being concerned with taking care of the people who voted for them.

As I close, think on this, and ponder the possibilities:

In the next election, all the powers that be – Senators, President, Governors, state board officials, etc. – are replaced by common people like you and me.  This could actually work – shoot, it couldn’t be any worse than it is now.  Just think – people controlling the federal budget that have actual real life experience with budgets.

Feel free to comment – especially you PK.

Have a blessed day, I certainly am
